Building Habits for Lifelong Learning with Liz Biswas

Room 113, Perez Building, 1:30 p.m.

This parent talk will discuss how to support your child in understanding and developing the executive functioning skills needed for successful practice habits, and how through that process we can nurture a love for lifelong learning. If a child is technically proficient on their instrument are they, or should they be proficient in organizational skills required to take charge of their practice? We will discuss why executive functioning skills are different from the fundamental technical skills of the instrument.

String Instrument Care for Parents with Anna Reusing

Room 220, Perez Building, 1:30 p.m.

In this session, Anna will review the details of how to properly maintain and adjust a bridge, how to install strings securely, and how to avoid common minor mishaps with bows. They will also discuss how to identify issues and make adjustments to violin setup, how much humidity is needed to sustain a violin, and the common issues that arise when a violin and/or bow is not maintained properly. 

Anna Reusing (they/them) is the Operations Manager at the Sound Post in Ottawa. They have over 7 years of experience working with orchestral string instruments and 20 years of experience playing violin/viola.

Body Mapping: Preventing Injury from the First Lesson with Jennifer Johnson & Paule Barsalou

As early childhood educators, Suzuki teachers are pioneers in nurturing the spirit of the child while successfully educating musical talent. Until recently, there was a dearth of accurate information about how to also nurture the body to prevent injury while teaching small children to create music. This Body Mapping session will provide anatomically accurate information about the body’s design to move and share ideas on making the applications in the earliest stages of Suzuki violin pedagogy in order to provide a foundation of free movement for all technique.

Enrichment Classes

When you register for the SAO Conference Student Day, you will have the option to select one of the following enrichment classes. Student Day will also include a group class, play-in (strings only), technique class (flutes only), Dalcroze class (piano and flute), and NEW this year, an optional recorder class add-on!

Percussion

In Percussion Class, teacher Jennie Seaborn will guide students through engaging, age-appropriate activities to develop their sense of pulse and rhythm. These concepts will be explored in a thoroughly active and participatory manner, as students use their own bodies as well as various objects and percussion instruments to experience, emulate and improvise rhythms. Rooted in the drum circle tradition common to many cultures, it aims for inclusivity and empowerment of all participants, as the space is given to each for self-expression and leadership. If you’d like to explore and improve your rhythmic skills and have some fun doing so, this is the course for you!

Dalcroze Eurythmics

What is a Dalcroze workshop?
A workshop in Dalcroze Eurythmics invites kids to musically train through movement. Dalcroze uses the body to develop musical knowledge through feeling and experiences with and through music. Activities for this type of workshop include components of active listening, rhythmic movement and creative problem solving.

Improvisation

Join Laura Nerenberg for an improvisation session!
Through fun and easy games, Laura will lead students to create improvised pieces. Improvisation has many benefits, it:
  • induces a flow state
  • develops pro-social skills
  • deepens the connection to the instrument
  • is fun!
Students don’t need any previous improvisation experience, special equipment or sheet music. They only need their instrument and an open mind.
Each student’s parent will get access to an online hand-out with information about how to keep their child improvising at home or with their teacher.
